Doro Pesch, the voice of Warlock, celebrated 30 years of Triumph and Agony Sept. 16th at the iconic Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood, California.
This sold-out crowd knew they better get to the Whisky a Go Go early to stake a spot. I was there four hours early. It wasn’t for nothing, as I had the pleasure of meeting some of Doro’s fans. Seven male fans all standing at the front of the stage, they had traveled to all five shows on this tour to see the German Metal Queen. I had a great time hearing the stories and seeing their pictures they had taken. Since I had never seen Doro Pesch live, they were giving me the heads up that she will stick the mic in your face expecting you to sing. Oh sorry, I only sing in my car when no one is around!
The fans are elbow to elbow, you can’t move or breath, as they start chanting “Doro, Doro… Doro”. The cheers erupt as you see the Pesch herself at the top of the stairs fist pumping and waving to the fans below. Her smile and energy was very infectious and felt throughout the club. Drummer Johnny Dee, guitarist Tommy Bolan, bassist Nick Douglas and guitarist/keyboardist Luca Princiotta worked their way down the stairs and hit the stage. All eyes were on those stairs watching the Metal Queen come down the stairs opening the set with Touch of Evil, following with I Rule the Ruins and rounding out the first three songs with East Meets West – all from Triumph and Agony.
Released in 1987, “Triumph and Agony was the biggest and best album” Pesch stated in a previous interview. To celebrate the 30th anniversary, Doro, accompanied by original guitarist Tommy Bolan, graced us with her presence on a brief five-city North American tour: Worchester, MA, New York City, Detroit MI, Chicago IL, and closing out the tour in West Hollywood, California to covering the album in its entirety.
The ninety-minute set was broken up into two segments. The only intermission was Pesch doing a quick clothing change, never missing a beat. Triumph and Agony consisted of eleven songs, one hit after another that never lost its power – fist pumping, head thrashing never-ending energy….Spitfire!! Guitarist Tommy Bolan ripping a guitar solo with that glowing blue ring that you can’t seem to take your eyes off of. Ending the segment with everyone’s favorite singing every word to All We Are.
Before we knew it, Doro and the boys were taking the fans down memory lane through the remaining Warlock discography kicking it off with Earthshaker Rock off Hellbound. Then adding a classic Breaking the Law from one of Doro’s solo albums Classic Diamonds followed by one of my favorites, Burning the Witches from the song titled album. It all was put on the table and the fans loved every minute. Closing out the show with Night of the Warlock from Fear No Evil, another Doro solo album.
This North America tour was a short one. I know for a fact her fans would love her to tour more here in the US. Doro Pesch is phenomenal, she’ll rock you to the core!
