First, off I’m going to be a little bit of a hypocrite, I’m all about “Metal” and the word “Punk Rock” doesn’t appeal to me. I could never understand the labeling of music over the years. But, being a fan of the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Green Day, Bad Religion (and the list could go on) it was time for me to step out of the “Metal” world to check out The Adicts for the first time.

The lights dimmed while the intro music starts to play, which is made up of snippets of different songs. I find myself singing some of the words, taking in the atmosphere. l notice a big banner spanning across the back of the stage with The Adicts’ logo and a smiling Mime better knows as the Clockwork Orange “Droog” which brings a smile to your face.

Hitting the stage are brothers and founders guitarist Pete “Pete Dee” Davison and drummer Michael “Kid Dee” Davison, rhythm guitarist Highko Strom and bassist KiKi Kabel, as frontman Keith “Monkey” Warren rushes to the front in what looks like a silver cocoon, opening up to beautiful wings of a butterfly, the birth of a new night, kicking off the show with Let’s Go, as Monkey sheds the wings, digging into his bag of goodies for decks of cards, Joker In The Pack both from the album Sound of Music, flicking cards out into the audience. Rounding out the first three songs with Horrorshow from the album All The Young Droogs. The confetti fell like rain. My heart was racing; the energy was infectious, the body surfing was dangerous, the smiles and cheers from the sold-out crowd were deafening and I must not forget the mosh pit! Fans weren’t moshing, they were dancing and skipping in one big circle. As my time in the photo pit was up, I was excited to see what was next.

The Adicts are from Ipswich, Suffolk, England and most recently celebrated their 40th anniversary. From the looks of it, there is no stopping them. They released their eleventh studio album And It Was So via Nuclear Blast Records in November 2017. Songs included in the set were And It Was So, Fucked Up World, and Gimme Something To Do.

Twenty-two songs and never a dull moment or break. A theatrical show reminded me of a Vaudeville show which was popular in the United States in the early twentieth Century (I’ve only read and seen pictures). Songs with meaning, infectious energy, streamers, confetti, beach balls, chopsticks, playing cards, teddy bears and monkeys, sing along, everything but the kitchen sink, so much fun! And a birthday song for Highko and Kiki. The Adicts had me from the first note; I loved them, it may have taken me forty years, better late than never – I’m a fan!

Their short tour here in California has come to an end; I have no doubt they will be back to their loyal fan base. Catch a show. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed, you will be pleasantly surprised, as I was.
