(Hameln, Germany) – The town of Hameln in Germany is probably known to most as Hamelin. Famous for the tale of the pied piper who cleared the town of rats in the middle ages. Each year in March the centre of the town is turned into a medieval market place. In celebration of the event, this year saw an inaugural concert by Subway to Sally.
Subway to Sally was founded in Potsdam, Germany in the early 1990s. Their music has clear folk, medieval and metal influences and they enjoy a large gothic following who have rightly labeled the band kings of medieval metal. Having released 12 studio albums, a number of live albums and live DVDs, Subway to Sally are a well established outfit, although their fame is mainly restricted to German-speaking countries.
I am being perfectly honest when I say I was not aware of the band before tonight and I wasn’t really sure what to expect. The band’s lyrics are entirely in German. However, I didn’t let that put me off, I was in Germany after all. I arrived at the sold out venue to find an excited and extremely mixed crowd. Subway to Sally are big business and a spectacular light show gave me one of the most entertaining gigs I have photographed in quite a while.
Thank you to Sandra Eichner at www.rosenheim-rocks.de for arranging access. Hameln and I must have had a positive effect, I have been asked to photograph a spin off concert in October when lead singer Eric Fish returns here in October.
