Bringing together three generations of exceptional pop music talent, multiple award-winning Halifax electronic music duo PINEO & LOEB have partnered with Canadian pop icons Glass Tiger to release This Is Your Life. Legendary Nova Scotia indie-rocker Matt Mays also lends his gritty and emotive voice to the track, which will be released today, February 21.
The single and video for This Is Your Life are a blend of nostalgia and celebration of what has gone before, but with a modern vibe and feel that combines the best elements of PINEO & LOEB’s remarkable production skills and the timeless songwriting excellence of Glass Tiger.
The track is a delightfully upbeat and wistful celebration of youthful exuberance, but also an ode to the continuing power music has to bring people of different ages, tastes, and backgrounds together in the spirit of harmony and collaboration.
Glass Tiger frontman and primary songwriter Alan Frew was seeking a new spin on This is Your Life (originally released in early 2019 on Glass Tiger’s 33 album) and was directed to PINEO & LOEB by CBC New Brunswick host Jeff Liberty, who knew not only of their excellent original music but how they infused that music with some very classic rock and pop sensibilities. He also knew that they were masters of the remix, with their most recent album, ELEVATION, featuring spellbindingly creative remixes of everything from Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven to TLC’s Waterfalls to versions of songs from Coldplay, Arcade Fire, U2 and Prince. The duo even garnered praise from Blue Öyster Cult front-man Buck Dharma for their take on Don’t Fear The Reaper.
For their equally compelling original songs, their philosophy of bringing disparate elements together to create something unique and special has seen the likes of Cape Breton fiddle master Ashley MacIsaac on the same track as DJ Skratch Bastid and rapper Ghettosocks on the song Foggy Dew on their 2017 release, LIFEBLOOD.
Getting a chance to work their magic on a song with such a noteworthy group, and using it as a way to continue to fulfill their desire to bring different genres and eras together was one PINEO & LOEB jumped into wholeheartedly.
“We originally were asked to do just a remix, but we met with Glass Tiger and pitched them the idea that we would like to do this as a new thing, not just as a derivative of their song. We wanted to make it into this new project and get other musicians involved. They thought it was a great idea, so we got some other instrumentalists, and we brought in Matt Mays,” said Mitchell Pineo, adding that one of the reasons to include Mays was as a nod to Bryan Adams’ background vocal performance on Glass Tiger’s first big hit, Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone).
“This is Your Life is a great song. It’s very interesting and introspective. It’s them looking back but also looking forward at the same time, which is inspiring. Structurally, it’s built with a pop song progression that is reminiscent of their big hits from the 1980s, especially Someday. I think it sounds just as good as those older songs.”
Glass Tiger rank among the most successful Canadian rock bands with a Grammy nomination, multiple Juno wins and a 4x certified platinum album. They’ve toured with legendary artists such as Journey, Duran Duran and most recently Corey Hart on a tour that introduced a whole new generation of fans to their timeless music, released over the course of a 33 year long career together.
Matt Mays is one of Canada’s most well known and consistently great rock acts selling out shows across North America, with a Juno win and Canadian radio hits under his belt. Mays shares the same hometown with PINEO & LOEB and this is their first release together, years in the making.
Multiple East Coast Music Award and Music Nova Scotia Award winners PINEO & LOEB are renowned both for their exciting and often hypnotic brand of original electronic music and DJ performances, earning both stellar critical and popular acclaim. In 2019, were named Electronic Artist of the Year and DJ of the Year at the Music Nova Scotia Awards, and Dance Recording of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards. In previous years, they have picked up four other East Coast Music Awards, solidifying their reputation as leaders and innovators in their genre. Their music has been released on Westwood Recordings, Sleeveless Records and Asylum Records/Warner Music in the UK.
Their remixes have led to national and international recognition, including prestigious bookings, as well as airplay and support from Virgin Radio, CBC Radio and the venerable BBC, earning the dynamic creative duo legions of fans in North America and throughout the globe. Over the years, PINEO & LOEB have been asked to share the stage with giants of the electronic music industry such as Zeds Dead, Keys N’ Krates, Black Tiger Sex Machine, Rezz, Dr. Fresch Skratch Bastid, and Rich Aucoin among many others.
Fans of the artists and music that came before them, both Loeb and Pineo were thrilled with how closely they got to work with Glass Tiger.
“We really can’t thank them enough. We are used to working with lots of different people, but we were just blown away at how receptive they were. They trusted us and let us take this project in the direction we thought it should go,” said Loeb.
