On Friday, Oct. 28, Sudbury band Fortunate Losers released their new single Desire from their forthcoming self-titled album due out in the Spring of 2023. Music Life Magazine caught up with the band to talk about the video shoot for Desire, working with Finger Eleven‘s Steve Molella, touring, and more! Check it out:
Congratulations on the new video for “Desire”. First off, what is the song about and who wrote it?
Thank you for the kind words, it goes a long way for us and our team. The song is about how one could risk everything for a strong enough desire.
We write collectively as a band. [Vocalist-guitarist] Devon [Cox] had come up with the main guitar riff, and we built the song from there, but it was just lacking something until our producer Steve Molella (Finger Eleven) entered the picture. He heard the song and knew exactly what we were looking to get across. He tapped right into the mindset we had when we were writing the song. I like to think he helped bring a lot of attitude to the final product.
The video was done at an abandoned drive-in. Where is this located and why did you guys decide to shoot the video there?
We shot the video at an abandoned drive-in just outside of Midland, Ontario. It’s become a landmark in the area and it was perfect to capture the vibe of the track.
On the day of the shoot, there was massive rain in the forecast and it couldn’t have been timed any better. We all got completely soaked. We definitely have some life-long memories and stories about that day!
How long did it take from start to finish to complete the video?
It was all shot in one day. We wanted to get in and out as quickly as possible because we may not have exactly had permission to shoot there. It was worth the risk of getting busted with our set-up and loud playback, but nobody came to shut us down so we were able to plow through what we needed to shoot. I think it took more time to unload and set up than it did to shoot it.
How would you describe the finished video?
It’s a very moody video with moments of high energy and it matches the song very well. We couldn’t be happier with the results.
Finger Eleven drummer Steve Molella produced the track. How did he get involved? Is he someone you knew before his involvement?
We played a festival with Finger Eleven a few years ago where we first met Steve. We managed to maintain a really solid friendship with him, which grew even more true through the process of recording with him. He did an amazing job producing “Desire” He knew how to dig in and get what he wanted for the track.
Will you be working with Steve on future songs or projects?
Absolutely! Working with Steve was one of the best studio experiences we have had as a band. He understood us and allowed us to amplify a better version of ourselves as musicians under his guidance and through the recording process.
What are your plans as far as touring? In the last few years, some of the people you’ve played with included Billy Talent, Buckcherry, Big Wreck, and the Trews. Is anything in the works?
We always have something in the works! Our plan for 2023 is to be on the road as much as possible. We are currently in the process of renovating our bus so we will be ready for any offers that come our way.
Are you working on any new material? Is there a full-length album in the works? If so, when can we expect that? Any sort of timeline?
We are always working on new material! Desire is the first single from our forthcoming self-titled album, which we plan on releasing in the Spring of 2023.
Is there anything else you would like to add or plug?
