Hard to believe the end of another season is fast approaching for the Tuesday Night Concert Series at Artpark in Lewiston, NY. Closing out the season at the Artpark Amphitheater will be classic rockers John Kay & Steppenwolf – who last played Artpark on June 26, 2007.
Steppenwolf was formed in late 1967 in Toronto by lead singer John Kay, keyboardist Goldy McJohn (who recently passed away on August 1) and drummer Jerry Edmonton (all formerly in Jack London & The Sparrows from Oshawa, Ontario). Guitarist Michael Monarch and bassist Rushton Moreve were recruited by notices placed in Los Angeles-area record and musical instrument stores.
Steppenwolf sold over 25 million records worldwide, released eight gold albums and 12 Billboard Hot 100 singles, of which six were top 40 hits, including three top 10 successes: Born to Be Wild, written by Dennis Edmonton (using the stage name Mars Bonfire), Magic Carpet Ride and Rock Me. Steppenwolf enjoyed worldwide success from 1968 to 1972, but clashing personalities led to the end of the core lineup.
Today, John Kay is the only original member, having served as the lead singer since 1967. Current band members include Michael Wilk (keyboards), Ron Hurst (drums), Danny Johnson (lead guitar and backing vocals) and Gary Link (bass).
General Admission tickets for John Kay & Steppenwolf are still available for $12 advance or $17 week of show (Sun-Tues) and can be purchased at the Artpark box office or online. For more details visit the Artpark website here.
Gates open at 4:45pm. Show starts at 6:30pm
