Lionel Richie
Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino
Niagara Falls, New York
August 26, 2022
It had been over 20 years since Lionel Richie played a show in the Niagara Falls/Buffalo area. So when the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Famer inductee was almost 90 minutes late last Friday night due to an airline delay from New York City, fans didn’t seem to mind waiting that extra little bit of time as they watched the Buffalo Bills pre-game being shown on the big screen TVs.
Then just before 9:30 PM, there was a 10-second countdown followed by Richie’s band coming on stage to play an overture while photos from Richie’s career showed in the background on a large video screen. Soon after, Richie came out and the show got underway with Running With the Night followed by Easy / My Love, Penny Lover, You Are, and more.
The show was full of hits from both his solo career and his days with The Commodores. One of the highlights for me was the cover of We Are the World by USA For Africa, a song Richie co-wrote with Michael Jackson in 1985 for charity and is the eighth-bestselling physical single of all time.
Throughout the show, Richie told stories and joked. The show lasted just over 90-minutes and finished with an encore of All Night Long (All Night). This show was well worth the wait but let’s hope it’s not another 20 years or so before Richie decides to come back.
