(Lewiston, NY) – It was a night of hits and covers when Artpark hosted its first sold-out show of the season with English rocker Peter Frampton and Rockford, IL band Cheap Trick on June 23. Both artists had previously played Artpark on separate nights in the past but tonight they came together for one show.
Both artists released iconic live albums in the 70’s. Frampton Comes Alive! is a double live album by Frampton released in 1976 and one of the best-selling live albums in the United States. Following four solo albums with little commercial success, Frampton Comes Alive! was a breakthrough for Frampton. Frampton has 17 studio albums, the latest being Hummingbird In A Box (2014).
Cheap Trick at Budokan is a live album released by Cheap Trick in 1978 and their best-selling recording. It was ranked number 426 in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.
Both Frampton and Cheap Trick played all their hits plus some covers.
Cheap Trick started the night at 6:30 p.m. when Robin Zander and company hit the stage with Hello There, Come On Come On and Big Eyes. Cheap Trick threw some covers into their set including The Beatles‘ Magical Mystery Tour, I’m Waiting For the Man by The Velvet Underground and Ain’t That A Shame by Fats Domino. And of course the more familiar songs included The Flame, I Want You To Want Me, Dream Police and Surrender pleased the 10,000 or so fans in attendance.
Frampton came alive just after 8:00 p.m. starting his set with Something Happening, Doobie Wah, and Show Me the Way. Stevie Wonder‘s Signed, Sealed and Delivered and Soundgarden‘s Black Hole Sun made it into the set along with the Frampton classics Baby I Love Your Way and Do You Feel Like We Do. Frampton’s encore Off the Hook ended the night.
It was a great night of classic rock from two of music’s great acts.
Still to come this summer are Melissa Etheridge, Blondie, Creedence Clearwater Revisted, J. Geils Band, Doobie Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more. To see who else is coming to Artpark this summer please visit the Artpark website.
