Review by Kevin Barrie,
The Pineapple Thief played their first gig in Ontario on Thursday, Nov. 28, at the Mod Club in Toronto. They had previously ventured to North America, including Quebec, to play festival gigs. However, following the addition of Gavin Harrison on drums in 2016, the band has achieved enough notoriety and interest to begin to tour North America and focus more time on their music.
The packed Mod Club audience was appreciative of the band’s enthusiastic performance, which drew largely from their most recent two albums, Your Wilderness (2016) and Dissolution (2018), both of which featured Gavin Harrison.
As noted in a recent interview with Music Life Magazine, the band’s next album is due for release in 2020, and the band is continuing to fire on all cylinders in an attempt to keep their audience growing.
In live performance, the band features the addition of guitarist George Marios, who also contributed to background vocals.
Opening for the band was a solo acoustic performance by Randy McStine of Lo-Fi Resistance – a collaborative project lead by McStine that has featured contributions from members of King Crimson, Tears for Fears, and Panic! At the Disco.
Prior to Toronto, the band had played in Montreal the previous evening, and travelled through a heavy snow storm to get to the Mod Club. Their next stop was the following evening in Cleveland.
