(Hannover, Germany) – Simple Minds played Hannover, Germany last week and I was fortunate enough to get access.
With almost 40 chart releases to their name Simple Minds were ‘THE’ band throughout most of the 1980’s. Although their popularity faded after the release of Real Life in 1991 they have never really stopped. 1991 was also the last time I saw Simple Minds in concert. Funnily enough, it was also in Germany. I just had a look in the cellar and I still have the ticket!! Tonight, Jim Kerr is almost a quarter of a century older. Their 2014 release Big Noise is on the charts and certainly in the United Kingdom. They seem to be going through a resurgence in popularity. As a band, could they still cut it live though? Absolutely they could!!
From the opening bars of “Let the Day Begin” the sold out venue was in the palm of Jim Kerr’s hand. Three songs were over in the blink of an eye and it was time to leave the photo pit. Something I don’t do often is stay at a concert until the end. However, tonight was an exception. To be honest, I don’t recall much from the current album. To me, that didn’t matter though and I suspect the same was true for most of the audience. “New Gold Dream”, “Waterfront”, “Don’t You Forget About Me”……..the hits kept coming.
Even in 2015 Simple Minds remain on the top 10 of the ‘bands to see live’ list. Their stage show and presence is as good, if not better now than it was through the 1980’s. Even if you don’t consider yourself a fan, do yourself a favour. Get out and see them live! You won’t be disappointed.
