Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators

Rock n’ Roll royalty Slash along with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators performed to a sold out crowd at Casino Rama recently, promoting their new record Living The Dream. We were fortunate enough to be the only Canadian date on this tour.
Although this is Slash‘s solo project it wasn’t like he was completely stealing the spot light. Yes he slayed the solos, however the band was certainly not left in the dust. Myles with his distinctive flawless vocal intonations, bassist Todd Kerns’ stage presence, the progressive beats of Brent Fitzgerald (Fitz) on drums along with Frank Sidoris spot on rhythm, these talented musicians are the perfect accent to the “Slash institution”. It didn’t feel like Slash was seeking attention, other then for his musical abilities. As a matter of fact, he only muttered a few words the entire night and that was to introduce Myles Kennedy. For a musician of his stature, it was kind of refreshing actually.
This was an evening of straight up Rock and Roll, featuring an array of songs from SMKC, Slash, Velvet Revolver and only one Guns N’ Roses song. I didn’t know what to expect regarding the setlist, however I think people may have been surprised with the lack of Guns N’ Roses songs. But the reality is, Slash along with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators has enough of a presence that the show wasn’t lacking enthusiasm or interest from the fans.
Canadian musician Todd Kerns stepped up to the mic a couple of times that evening to take over vocals. Singing Doctor Alibi and We’re All Gonna Die, both Slash songs. One thing that I can say about Kerns, is that he is the quintessential Rock and Roller. He just has this presence about him that screams Rock Star. Generally bass players don’t command such a presence, but he does.
One of my favorite covers of the night was the Velvet Revolver song Falling to Pieces. I’ve always like that tune and it was a nice surprise to hear. It just so happens that it was the first time they played it on this tour. Another debut song for this tour was the Guns N’ Roses song Nightrain. People went nuts when it was being performed.
The man himself, Slash had what appeared to be a flawless performance. A man with as much talent as he has, it was a true delight to witness up close and personal. For a moment while in the pit, I put my camera down and thought wow, I could touch him right now, which of course I did not, but it was a bit of a surreal moment.
For the love of everything Rock and Roll, if you are a part of Generation X and have to opportunity to see this show, you will not be disappointed!
