The Smithereens brought their blend of power pop, rock, and alternative rock to the beautiful West Herr Riviera Theatre in North Tonawanda, NY, on Nov. 20th, delivering a dynamic performance that celebrated their rich history and enduring appeal. The historic venue, with its intricate architecture and updated facilities, provided the perfect setting for an evening of nostalgic yet vibrant music.

With their 45th anniversary approaching in March 2025, the band showcased why they remain icons in the rock world. Although the late, great vocalist Pat DiNizio’s presence was deeply missed, Robin Wilson of the Gin Blossoms handled vocals with heartfelt energy and charisma. His voice seamlessly melded with the Smithereens‘ classic sound, giving fans both a sense of nostalgia and something refreshingly new.

Graham Maby, a veteran of Joe Jackson’s band, stepped in on bass for the absent Mike Mesaros, delivering a polished performance that complemented Dennis Diken’s rock-solid drumming and Jim Babjak’s signature guitar riffs. Together, they recreated the magic that has defined the Smithereens for decades.

The setlist was a masterclass in power pop and rock, opening with the punchy “Behind the Wall of Sleep” and launching straight into the infectious energy of “Top of the Pops” and “Sorry.” Fans were treated to beloved deep cuts like “Strangers When We Meet” and “Groovy Tuesday,” as well as staples like “Only a Memory” and “Blood and Roses.”

Highlights included Jim Babjak stepping up for lead vocals on the poignant “Life is So Beautiful” and Dennis Diken’s soulful turn on “I Don’t Want to Lose You.” The band’s versatility shone as they transitioned from introspective ballads to high-energy covers of Sam Cooke’s “Chain Gang” and Badfinger’s “No Matter What”.

The evening culminated with the electrifying “A Girl Like You,” a song that remains as fresh and anthemic as when it first hit the airwaves. The audience’s enthusiasm throughout the night was a testament to the enduring power of the Smithereens‘ music.

This performance was more than a concert; it was a celebration of a band that continues to resonate deeply with fans old and new. The Smithereens, alongside Robin Wilson and Graham Maby, proved that even after 45 years, their music still has the power to unite and uplift. If this show was any indication, their milestone anniversary next year will be a celebration not to be missed.

Opening for the Smithereens was John Hampson, singer of the band Nine Days. Hampson played an acoustic set which included the band’s hit “Absolutely (Story of A Girl)”.

This was definitely a show not to miss!
