You Me at Six performed at The Opera House recently, playing their only Canadian date on this tour in the 416. This show marked the first time in four years that they have performed in Toronto. You Me at Six are touring to promote their latest album VI which was release in October of 2018.
If you are as naive as I am, you have never heard of them. Doing a bit of research, I realized my head must have been buried in the sand! They have an enormous following on their socials. This English Rock band has been around for 15 years and have a loyal fan base. When asked to cover this show I was given a teaser link to give me an idea of what they were like. They fit well within my personal interest of genre so I accepted the gig.
Arriving at the venue, the old historical building had a very healthy attendance. One thing I certainly wasn’t expecting was the average age of the crowd to be teens and early 20s. I felt slightly out of place but then thought to myself, music has no age restrictions.
At 9:15 PM the lights dimmed and You Me at Six took to the stage. The decibels in the building rose as the crowd when nuts!
Front man Josh Franceschi had a great stage presence, easily engaging with the crowd, shaking peoples’ hands and crouching down to down to sing directly to some of their loyal followers.
Hearing the crowd sing word for word their songs, it was a bit of an eye opener. There is no bigger compliment to a band when this occurs. It made me reflect on the enjoyment of the crowd and their experience.
The musicianship was on point. Each musician meshed like a well oil machine.
They put on an impressive 18 song set, comprising of four songs for the encore.
I thought they put on a great show. My only regret is that I haven’t heard of their material before. Next time they cross the pond, I will certainly see them again. And so should you!
