SIMO with Sour Cream

Tonight was going to be a great night of music! I had seen JD Simo and his band 3 previous times, with the last time in 2015. I knew what those in attendance at The Burl were in for, some incredible music and mind bending guitar playing!
Who I didn’t know was the opening band Sour Cream. I was about to learn all about them! Harlan Cecil (guitar and vocals) Jon Ellis McGee (drums) and Colby Grant (Bass) laid down some serious Kentucky blues rock! All between the ages of 16 and 17 these three have music in their blood! Two of them, Harlan and Jon Ellis are grandsons of The Kentucky Headhunters’ Greg Martin, so it’s safe to say they’ve been around music their entire lives! This was my first time hearing them and I was impressed, I think you will be as well. If you’re in the Lexington, KY area and have a chance to catch them, take it!
JD Simo…well in the words of legendary blues rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa “JD is one of the best out there right now!” Don’t take his word or mine, get out and see and hear for yourself! Not only is JD a phenomenal guitar player but he’s equally as good a person. This night he came out dressed the part of a blues man, sport coat and tie and proceeded to try his best to burn down the Burl with his scorching guitar work! He played mostly original tunes but threw in a few amazing covers of past bluesmen. Before those covers JD gave us a brief history behind each of those songs, the men that wrote and performed them. When I first saw SIMO, JD did very little talking on stage just an insane amount of energy (that was challenging to photograph, in constant motion). Now a few years later he has a more controlled stage presence and more interaction with the audience. After the show that interaction took on a personal aspect. He shook hands, talked with and signed autographs for anyone that wanted to speak with him.
This was my second trip to The Burl, a beautiful venue in Lexington, KY. Catch a show here whenever you have a chance!
